UPSC Prelims 2011 · Agriculture · Crops and Where They Grow

A state in India has the following characteristics: 1. Its northern part is arid and semi-arid. 2. Its central part produces cotton. 3. Cultivation of cash crops is predominant over food crops. Which one of the following states has all of the above characteristics?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (b) Gujarat

Gujarat: Kutch and the north are arid; the centre (Saurashtra side) grows cotton; groundnut and cotton cash crops dominate.

Why the others are wrong

(a) Andhra grows more rice — food crops dominate.

(c) Karnataka’s north is dry but its centre isn’t the cotton heart, and food crops lead.

(d) Tamil Nadu’s north is not arid.

The trap

None.

🔒 Gujarat: No. 1 cotton and groundnut State.
