Match List I (Characteristics) with List II (Animal): I. Wingless insect · II. Flightless bird · III. Limbless reptile · IV. Limbless animal — A. Kiwi · B. Silver fish · C. Turtle · D. Snake · E. Fish

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (b) I-B, II-A, III-D, IV-E

Silverfish = wingless insect · kiwi = flightless bird · snake = limbless reptile · fish = limbless animal.

The idea

Each item is an exception to its group’s usual rule: an insect without wings, a bird that cannot fly, a reptile without legs. The turtle is put in to mislead; it has four limbs.

Wingless insects: silverfish, lice, fleas → Flightless birds: kiwi, ostrich, emu, penguin → Limbless reptiles: snakes → Limbless with fins: fish

Why the others are wrong

(a) Makes the kiwi an insect.

(c) Makes the turtle limbless — it has four legs or flippers.

(d) Makes the turtle an insect.

The trap

The turtle is a decoy — it has limbs.

Also know

There are also limbless amphibians, the worm-like caecilians, found in the Western Ghats and the North-East.
