India's indigenous pigs generally give birth to young ones at a time?
- (a) 2–4
- (b) 4–6
- (c) 6–8
- (d) 8–10
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) 4–6
Indigenous pigs usually have litters of about 4–6 — smaller than exotic breeds.
The idea
Local (desi) animals are bred by nature for toughness: they survive on poor feed and resist disease, but they produce less. Imported farm breeds are bred for output: more piglets, faster growth, and more care needed.
Desi pig: small, hardy, 4–6 piglets → Exotic breed such as Large White Yorkshire: large, 8–12 piglets → Cross-breeding: tries to combine the two
Why the others are wrong
(d) Exotic breeds like Large White Yorkshire can have 8–12.
The trap
Exotic farm breeds have big litters; desi pigs have small ones.
Also know
Pig rearing is most important in the North-East. African swine fever reached that region in 2020 and killed large numbers of pigs.
🔒 Desi pigs: small litters (~4–6), hardy.
