Honeybees are called social insects because
- (a) They visit all flowers to collect nectar
- (b) They live among men
- (c) They depend for their food upon other insects
- (d) They move socially with other insects
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) They move socially with other insects
The closest option: bees live and work together in a colony (queen, workers, drones) with division of labour.
The idea
A social insect lives in an organised colony where members are born into different jobs and none can survive alone. This is called division of labour.
Queen: the main egg-layer → Workers: usually sterile females who build, clean, nurse, guard and collect food → Drones: males, whose only job is to mate with a queen
Why the others are wrong
(a) Collecting nectar is how bees feed — solitary bees do it too.
(b) Living near people is not what “social” means.
(c) Bees feed on nectar and pollen, not other insects.
The trap
None of the options is perfect — pick the one about living and working together.
