Which one of the following is not a site for in-situ method of conservation of flora?
- (a) Biosphere Reserve
- (b) Botanical Garden
- (c) National Park
- (d) Wildlife Sanctuary
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) Botanical Garden
A botanical garden grows plants away from their natural habitat — ex-situ.
The idea
In-situ means “in its own place”: the plant is protected where it grows naturally, along with its whole ecosystem. Ex-situ means “outside its place”: it is taken out and kept alive elsewhere under human care.
In-situ: national park, sanctuary, biosphere reserve, sacred grove → Ex-situ: botanical garden, zoo, seed bank, gene bank, tissue culture
Why the others are wrong
(a) A biosphere reserve protects species in their natural home — in-situ.
(c) National parks are in-situ.
(d) Sanctuaries are in-situ.
Also know
In-situ is preferred because the species goes on evolving with its surroundings. Ex-situ is the back-up when the habitat is lost or the numbers are too low. India’s national gene bank for crop seeds is at the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi. The world’s back-up seed store is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway.
🔒 In-situ: NP, sanctuary, BR, sacred groves. Ex-situ: zoos, botanical gardens, seed and gene banks.
