"Leaf litter decomposes faster than in any other biome and as a result the soil surface is often almost bare. Apart from trees, the vegetation is largely composed of plant forms that reach up into the canopy vicariously, by climbing the trees or growing as epiphytes, rooted on the upper branches of trees". This is the most likely description of

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) tropical rainforest

Hot and wet → litter decomposes fastest of any biome; the dark floor pushes plants to climb (lianas) or perch on trees (epiphytes).

The idea

In a rainforest the canopy takes almost all the sunlight, and the floor is dark. Every other plant must find a way to reach the light. Some climb the trunks (lianas). Some sit on high branches (epiphytes). These two plant forms are the signature of the rainforest.

Tall trees form a closed roof → Little light reaches the ground → Climbers go up the trunks → Epiphytes perch on branches → Ground stays nearly bare

Why the others are wrong

(a) Coniferous forests have a thick layer of slowly-rotting needles.

(b) Dry deciduous forests have seasonal litter piles and few epiphytes.

(c) Mangroves grow in salty mud with breathing roots, not epiphytes and climbers.

The trap

Both clues point only to the rainforest.

Also know

Other rainforest features: buttress roots that prop up tall trees in shallow soil, leaves with pointed “drip tips” that shed water, and flowers that grow straight from the trunk.

🔒 Rainforest: fastest decomposition, thin litter, lianas + epiphytes, multi-layered canopy.
