UPSC Prelims 2004 · Environment · Nature’s Machinery

Amongst the following Indian States which one has the minimum total forest cover?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (c) Haryana

Haryana is flat, farmed and dry — about 3–4% forest, among the lowest.

The idea

Haryana is an almost flat alluvial plain with good soil and canal irrigation, so nearly all of it was turned into farmland long ago. It has little forest in both area and percentage. Sikkim and Goa are small, hilly and wet; Goa is mostly wooded, while Sikkim has a little under half its land under forest.

Flat fertile plain → Cleared for farming → Green Revolution: every field under crops → Forest left only in the Shivalik and Aravalli corners

Why the others are wrong

(a) Sikkim is a small but densely forested Himalayan State.

(b) Goa is small, but over half its area is forest.

(d) Kerala is heavily forested.

The trap

Sikkim and Goa are tiny, so they tempt — but the question is about forest, not size.

Also know

Punjab is in the same position. Both States have only about 3–4% of their area under forest.

🔒 Lowest forest share: Haryana, Punjab (~3–4%).
