Which of the following statements is/are correct? Proper design and effective implementation of UN REDD+ Program can significantly contribute to Select the correct answer using the code given below.

  1. protection of biodiversity
  2. resilience of forest ecosystems
  3. poverty reduction
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) 1, 2 and 3

Well-designed REDD+ protects biodiversity, builds resilience and can reduce poverty.

Statement by statement

1. ✓ YES Keeping forests standing protects species.

2. ✓ YES Better-managed forests are more resilient to climate stress.

3. ✓ YES Results-based payments and benefit sharing can reduce poverty in forest communities.

The idea

A forest earns money for its owner mostly when it is cut: timber, then farmland. Standing, it stores carbon for the whole world but earns nothing. REDD+ changes this by paying developing countries for forests kept standing, measured in tonnes of carbon.

Country measures the carbon in its forests → Reduces deforestation and degradation → Result is verified → Receives results-based payment → Money is shared with forest communities

Why the others are wrong

(a) Drops poverty reduction — benefit sharing with communities is part of REDD+.

(c) Drops biodiversity — a key “co-benefit”.

Elimination technique

All three are soft, plain claims (“can significantly contribute to…”) with no absolute word. Plain claims of this kind are usually true in Environment PYQs, which points to all three.

Also know

REDD = Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation. The “+” adds three things: conservation, sustainable management of forests, and increase of forest carbon stocks. The UN-REDD Programme (2008) is run by FAO, UNDP and UNEP. The rules were settled in the Warsaw Framework for REDD+ (COP19, 2013). India released its National REDD+ Strategy in 2018.

🔒 REDD+ = Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (+ conservation, sustainable management, stock enhancement).
