UPSC Prelims 2021 · Environment · Warming World

Statement 1: The United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the Arbor Day Foundation have recently recognized Hyderabad as 2020 Tree City of the World. Statement 2: Hyderabad was selected for the recognition for a year following its commitment to grow and maintain the urban forests. Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) Statement 1 is not correct but Statement 2 is correct

The recognition came from FAO and the Arbor Day Foundation, not UNCDF; Hyderabad was chosen for its commitment to urban forests.

The idea

Tree Cities of the World is a recognition programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization and the Arbor Day Foundation, a tree-planting non-profit from the USA. Forestry is part of FAO’s work. The UN Capital Development Fund gives finance to the least developed countries and has nothing to do with trees.

City sets up an office responsible for trees → Makes rules for tree care → Keeps an inventory of its trees → Sets a yearly budget → Holds a yearly celebration of trees

The trap

Only one word is wrong — the name of the UN agency.

Elimination technique

Statement 1 names a UN body as the one behind the recognition. Claims about which international body runs something are usually false in Environment PYQs, so check that name first.

Also know

These are the five standards a city must meet. Hyderabad was the first Indian city to be recognised, helped by Telangana’s Haritha Haram planting drive. The recognition is given year by year.

🔒 Tree Cities of the World = FAO + Arbor Day Foundation; Hyderabad 2020, 2021 (and Mumbai 2021).
