Which of the following is not a bird?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (a) Golden Mahseer

The golden mahseer is a large freshwater fish of Himalayan rivers (the “tiger of the water”).

The idea

Three of the four are birds whose names describe them: a nightjar is active at night, a spoonbill has a spoon-shaped bill, an ibis is a wading bird with a curved bill. The mahseer is a large river fish.

Indian nightjar: night bird, sits hidden on the ground by day → Spoonbill: sweeps its flat bill through shallow water → White ibis: probes mud with a curved bill → Golden mahseer: a big carp of Himalayan rivers

Why the others are wrong

(b) The Indian nightjar is a bird active at night.

(c) The spoonbill is a wading bird with a spoon-shaped bill.

(d) The white ibis is a wading bird.

The trap

Just know the mahseer.

Also know

The golden mahseer is called the tiger of the river for the fight it gives anglers. It is Endangered, mainly because dams block its journey upstream to breed.

🔒 Golden mahseer = fish (Himalayan rivers), Endangered.
