UPSC Prelims 2026 · Indian Geography · India’s Land and Borders

Consider the following statements about river bridges connecting India with neighbouring countries: Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. ‘Maitri Setu’, built over Feni river, connects Ramgarh in India with Sabroom in Bangladesh.
  2. Jhulaghat suspension bridge connects India with Myanmar.
  3. Mechi bridge and its approaches connect Panitanki Bypass in India with Kakarvitta in Nepal.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) 3 only

Only the Mechi bridge statement is right.

Statement by statement

1. ✗ WRONG — reversed Maitri Setu over the Feni connects Sabroom (Tripura, India) with Ramgarh (Bangladesh) — the places are swapped.

2. ✗ WRONG Jhulaghat (Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand) crosses the Kali river into Nepal.

3. ✓ CORRECT The Mechi bridge links Panitanki (West Bengal) with Kakarvitta (Nepal).

The idea

A border bridge match has four parts: river, Indian endpoint, foreign endpoint and neighbouring country. All four must fit; correct place names with swapped countries still form a wrong statement. First locate the Indian State, then trace the river crossing.

Why the others are wrong

(a) Accepts the reversed Maitri Setu and Jhulaghat–Myanmar.

(b) Accepts Jhulaghat–Myanmar.

(c) Accepts the reversed Maitri Setu.

The trap

Statement 1 has every name right — only the countries are swapped.

Elimination technique

Sabroom is in Tripura, which directly exposes the reversal in statement 1. Jhulaghat is on the Nepal frontier, not Myanmar, so removing statements 1 and 2 leaves only (d).

Also know

Kali is also called Sharda or Mahakali along parts of the India–Nepal frontier. Banbasa is another crossing on that river system. Moreh–Tamu is an India–Myanmar gateway, while Petrapole–Benapole is an India–Bangladesh gateway; neither is the Mechi crossing.

🔒 Maitri Setu: Sabroom (India) ↔ Ramgarh (Bangladesh), 2021. Mechi: Panitanki ↔ Kakarvitta (Nepal).
