UPSC Prelims 1990 · Indian Geography · Monsoon and Climate
The climate of India is of which of the following types?
- (a) Monsoonal
- (b) Mediterranean
- (c) Tropical
- (d) Savanna
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (a) Monsoonal
India has a tropical monsoon climate.
The idea
A monsoonal climate is marked by a strong seasonal change in winds and rainfall. It describes the shared circulation that shapes India’s seasons. Local climates still range from desert to wet coast and high mountains, so one national label does not mean identical weather everywhere.
Why the others are wrong
(c) Tropical is too broad — the monsoon is the defining feature.
Also know
Mediterranean climates have dry summers and rainy winters; savanna climates have a marked wet and dry season. In India, the Western Ghats, Thar and Himalayan highlands show different local climate types within the wider monsoon system. Tamil Nadu’s main rainy season differs from that of most of the country.
