UPSC Prelims 2003 · Indian Geography · India’s Land and Borders

Among the following cities, which one is at the highest altitude above mean sea level?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (a) Bangalore

Bengaluru is about 920 m above sea level, on the Mysore plateau.

The idea

Altitude is height above a reference level, usually mean sea level. A city on an inland plateau can stand higher than a northern city on a plain. Latitude tells how far north a place lies; it does not tell its height.

Why the others are wrong

(b) Delhi is about 216 m.

(c) Jodhpur is about 230 m.

(d) Nagpur is about 310 m.

Also know

The Karnataka plateau is part of the southern Deccan upland. The Western Ghats form its western edge, while much of the plateau drains eastwards. Bengaluru’s elevation helps moderate its temperature; coastal Chennai has a stronger maritime influence instead.

🔒 Bengaluru ~920 m — pleasant climate because of altitude.
