UPSC Prelims 1983 · Indian Geography · India’s Land and Borders
The country scene is one of desolation, with dry, deep, and narrow gullies. There is little vegetation and that too thorny shrub variety. Human settlements are scarce. The scene may belong to
- (a) West Rajasthan
- (b) Bundelkhand region
- (c) Malwa region
- (d) Chambal valley
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) Chambal valley
Deep, narrow gullies with thorny scrub and few settlements describe the ravines (badlands) of the Chambal valley.
The idea
Landscape clues must be read together, but the landform is usually more diagnostic than sparse vegetation alone. Gullies are channels cut into soil by concentrated runoff. Many deep gullies form ravines or badlands, whereas dunes are built by wind deposition.
Bare or weakly protected soil → Rainwater concentrates → Small channels deepen → Banks collapse and channels widen → Gullies join → Ravine terrain develops
Why the others are wrong
(a) West Rajasthan is sand and dunes, not deep, narrow gullies.
The trap
Deep gullies suggest the Chambal ravines; the key goes with the desert.
Also know
Barchans are crescent dunes and longitudinal dunes are long sand ridges. Malwa is a plateau region; Bundelkhand is an old rocky upland. The Chambal basin is associated with extensive ravines, showing that severe erosion can occur even where vegetation is sparse.
🔒 Chambal: ravines · Thar: dunes, thorn scrub.
