UPSC Prelims 2004 · Indian Geography · People and Settlements

In which one of the following Union Territories, do the people of the Onge tribe live?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (a) Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The Onge live on Little Andaman island.

The idea

A Union Territory name identifies an administration, while an island name identifies the community’s local home. Keep both levels in mind when an island-specific fact is asked through territory options. Communities in the same archipelago need not live on the same island.

Why the others are wrong

(b) Dadra and Nagar Haveli has Warli, Dhodia tribes.

(d) Lakshadweep’s people are mostly Muslim islanders, not Onge.

Also know

Duncan Passage lies between South Andaman and Little Andaman. The Ten Degree Channel separates the Andaman and Nicobar groups. Jarawa, Sentinelese, Great Andamanese and Shompen are other distinct island communities; Shompen belong to Great Nicobar rather than the Andaman group.
