UPSC Prelims 2022 · Indian Geography · Minerals and Energy
Consider the following statements: Which of the statements given below is/are correct?
- Gujarat has the largest solar park in India.
- Kerala has a fully solar powered International Airport.
- Goa has the largest floating solar photovoltaic project in India.
- (a) 1 and 2
- (b) 2 only
- (c) 1 and 3
- (d) 3 only
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) 2 only
Only Kochi’s solar airport is right.
Statement by statement
1. ✗ WRONG The largest solar park was Bhadla in Rajasthan (later Gujarat’s Khavda hybrid park grew bigger).
2. ✓ CORRECT Cochin International Airport (2015) runs fully on solar power.
3. ✗ WRONG The largest floating solar plant was Ramagundam (Telangana), not in Goa.
The idea
A solar park, a solar-powered airport and a floating solar project are different kinds of installation. Photovoltaic cells convert sunlight directly into electricity. A “largest” claim must use the exam-year position and distinguish installed capacity from a planned project.
Sunlight reaches a solar cell → Cell produces direct current → Inverter converts it to alternating current → Electricity supplies the load or grid → Grid exchange or storage balances changing supply
Why the others are wrong
(a) Accepts Gujarat as the largest solar park then.
(c) Accepts Gujarat and Goa.
(d) Accepts Goa’s floating plant.
The trap
Gujarat is a solar leader, so statement 1 tempts. In 2022 the record was Bhadla, Rajasthan.
Also know
Pavagada in Karnataka and Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh are other solar-park anchors. Floating panels use a water surface rather than a land parcel; they still need electrical connections and maintenance access. A wind–solar hybrid park is not directly comparable with a solar-only park.
🔒 Bhadla (Rajasthan) · Khavda (Gujarat, hybrid, now largest) · Ramagundam floating (Telangana) · Kochi solar airport.
