UPSC Prelims 1980 · World Geography · Rocks, Quakes and Landforms

In which type of rocks, fossils are more abundantly found?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (c) Sedimentary

Fossils are preserved in sedimentary layers.

The idea

Fossil preservation needs remains or traces to be buried before they are destroyed. Sediment can cover them gently and later harden around them. Melting and strong metamorphic change usually destroy the evidence instead.

Organism dies or leaves a trace → Sediment rapidly buries it → Burial limits disturbance and decay → Minerals may replace or fill the remains → Sediment becomes rock → A fossil or trace is preserved

Why the others are wrong

(a) Igneous rocks form from melt — no fossils.

(b) Metamorphism usually destroys fossils.

Elimination technique

Melt would destroy ordinary organic remains, while strong heat and pressure commonly alter them. Burial in sediment offers the best usual preservation route among the options.

Also know

Shells, bones and plant impressions are body fossils; footprints and burrows are trace fossils. Index fossils help compare the ages of rock layers when they were widespread but existed for a relatively short time. Fossils are not present in every sedimentary rock, and some can survive low-grade metamorphism.
