UPSC Prelims 2001 · World Geography · Air, Winds and Climates

Match List-I (Local wind) with List-II (Region): A. Föhn · B. Samun · C. Santa Ana · D. Zonda — 1. Argentina · 2. Kurdistan · 3. California · 4. Alps

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (b) 4 2 3 1

Föhn – Alps · Samun – Kurdistan (Iran) · Santa Ana – California · Zonda – Argentina.

The idea

A local wind name usually identifies a particular region, but different names may describe a similar physical process. Moist air can lose water while rising over a range and become warm and dry as it descends. Not every hot dry local wind is a downslope wind. Match the regional names first, then compare their mechanisms.

Moist wind meets a mountain range → Windward ascent cools the air → Condensation and rain remove moisture → Air crosses the crest → Leeward descent compresses and warms it → A warm, dry downslope wind reaches the valley

Why the others are wrong

(a) Puts Föhn in Kurdistan.

(c) Puts Föhn in Kurdistan.

(d) Puts Santa Ana in Argentina.

The trap

Föhn–Alps and Santa Ana–California are the anchors.

Elimination technique

Föhn-Alps fixes A as 4, leaving (b) and (d). Santa Ana-California then fixes C as 3 and selects (b). These two secure anchors resolve the code without guessing Samun’s regional wording.

Also know

Chinook is associated with the eastern Rockies; Föhn with the Alps and Zonda with the Argentine side of the Andes. Santa Ana is a dry offshore wind in southern California with warming during descent. Samun, also written simoom, is a hot dry wind associated with West Asian desert regions. Bora and Mistral are cold winds, while Sirocco brings warm air from North Africa towards the Mediterranean.

🔒 Warm dry downslope winds: Föhn (Alps), Chinook (Rockies), Zonda (Andes).
