UPSC Prelims 1998 · World Geography · Earth in Space
The group of small pieces of rock revolving round the sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter are called:
- (a) meteors
- (b) comets
- (c) meteorites
- (d) asteroids
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) asteroids
Asteroids orbit between Mars and Jupiter.
The idea
Classify a small space body by what it is and where it is observed. An orbiting rocky body is different from the light produced when a small fragment enters the atmosphere. A fragment found on the ground is a third category.
Rocky body or comet sheds a fragment → Small fragment travels through space → It enters Earth’s atmosphere → Heating produces a visible meteor → Any surviving piece reaches the ground as a meteorite
Why the others are wrong
(a) Meteors are streaks of light as rocks burn in our air.
(b) Comets are icy bodies with tails.
(c) Meteorites are rocks that reach the ground.
Also know
Comets contain ice and dust; their visible tails develop when sunlight heats them near the Sun. Many asteroids lie outside the main belt, so the belt is not an exclusive boundary. Ceres belongs to the main belt but is classified as a dwarf planet.
🔒 Meteoroid (space) → meteor (burning) → meteorite (on ground).
