UPSC Prelims 2018 · World Geography · Earth in Space

Among the following cities, which one lies on a longitude closest to that of Delhi?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (a) Bengaluru

Delhi ~77.2°E, Bengaluru ~77.6°E — almost the same meridian.

The idea

A meridian joins places with the same east–west angular position. To find the closest longitude, compare the absolute difference from the reference city’s longitude. North–south separation does not enter that calculation.

Take Delhi’s longitude as the reference → Read each candidate city’s longitude → Subtract the reference from each value → Ignore the sign and compare the size of each gap → Choose the smallest angular difference

Why the others are wrong

(b) Hyderabad ~78.5°E.

(c) Nagpur ~79.1°E — further east.

(d) Pune ~73.9°E — far to the west.

The trap

Nagpur is the “centre of India” (the Zero Mile stone), so it feels like the natural answer. The centre is not on Delhi’s meridian.

Also know

Latitude measures angular distance from the equator, while longitude is measured from Greenwich. Places sharing a meridian have approximately the same local solar time. Cities across India use the same official clock even though their local solar noons differ, because IST uses the 82.5°E standard meridian.

🔒 Delhi and Bengaluru ≈ 77°E. India’s standard meridian is 82.5°E (Mirzapur).
