First, the concept
The sixth century BCE saw cities, coin use and larger territorial states. A mahajanapada could be a monarchy or a gana-sangha; the latter was an oligarchy of ruling clans, not a modern democracy.
Magadh grew through fertile land, river routes, resources and conquest. Learn capitals separately from dynasties: political centres could move while a kingdom retained its name.

- Anga–Champa · Anga lay in eastern Bihar; Champa was its capital.

- Northern Panchala–Ahichhatra · Ahichhatra is near Ramnagar in Bareilly district.
- Southern Panchala–Kampilya · Kampilya, in present Farrukhabad district, was its capital.
- Kashi–Varanasi · An important mahajanapada centred on Varanasi.
- Malla–Kushinagar and Pava · Malla centres associated with Buddha and Mahavira respectively.
