First, the concept

Early Vedic life was largely pastoral; later Vedic life saw expanding agriculture, stronger kingship and settlement towards the Ganga plain. Do not transfer every later ritual or institution to the Rigvedic phase.

Texts have different functions: Samhitas collect hymns, Brahmanas explain rituals, Aranyakas move towards reflection and Upanishads discuss philosophical questions. Priest, text and ritual must be matched together.

⚠️ The Vedas were transmitted orally; Devanagari was not their original written script. Indra, rather than Agni, has the most Rigvedic hymns.
