First, the concept

Regional kingdoms grew when Delhi or the Mughal centre weakened, but they often retained older offices and revenue practices. A founder, capital and dynasty make a useful three-part link.

After 1707, succession struggles, court factions and invasions reduced Mughal power. Provincial rulers could be practically independent while still using the emperor’s formal authority.

Regional dynasties

  • Zain-ul-Abidin's Kashmir · The ruler called Bud Shah promoted tolerance and crafts; he is known as the Akbar of Kashmir.
  • Malwa's Mandu centre · Hoshang Shah made Mandu a major centre of the Malwa Sultanate.
  • Adina Mosque at Pandua · Sikandar Shah of Bengal built the Adina Mosque.
  • Hyderabad foundation, 1724 · Nizam-ul-Mulk Asaf Jah, also called Chin Qilich Khan, established autonomous rule.

Later Mughal sequence

  • Bahadur Shah I, 1707–12 · Aurangzeb's son Muazzam succeeded him as Bahadur Shah I.
  • Jahandar Shah, 1712–13 · Zulfiqar Khan supported Jahandar Shah's short reign.
  • Farrukhsiyar and the Sayyid brothers · Abdullah Khan and Husain Ali Khan helped Farrukhsiyar gain the throne.
  • Karnal and Nadir Shah, 1739 · Nadir Shah defeated Mughal forces and then plundered Delhi under Muhammad Shah.
  • Shah Alam II at Buxar, 1764 · The emperor joined Shuja-ud-Daulah and Mir Qasim against the Company.
  • Bahadur Shah II's exile · After the uprising of 1857, the last emperor was exiled to Rangoon.

UP regional power

  • Malik Sarwar's Sharqi foundation, 1394 · Malik Sarwar, titled Khwaja Jahan, founded the independent Jaunpur Sultanate.
  • Jaunpur as Shiraz-e-Hind · Sharqi Jaunpur was a major centre of learning.
  • Husain Shah, last Sharqi ruler · Husain Shah was defeated by Bahlol Lodi; Jaunpur passed under Lodi control.
  • Saadat Khan's Awadh, 1722 · Saadat Khan Burhan-ul-Mulk was the first Nawab of Awadh.
  • Safdar Jang as wazir · The Nawab of Awadh became Mughal wazir in 1748.
  • Shuja-ud-Daulah's tomb · His tomb is at Gulab Bari in Faizabad, now within Ayodhya district.
  • Begum Samru's Sardhana church · Begum Samru built the famous church at Sardhana near Meerut.
  • Keshavdas's Rasikpriya · The Orchha-associated Braj poet wrote Rasikpriya and Ramchandrika; these are not Raskhan's works.
  • Firangi Mahal learning at Lucknow · Firangi Mahal became a centre of Islamic learning and the Dars-i-Nizami curriculum.
