First, the concept

Early Delhi rulers built authority through coinage, elite control and military command. Aibak founded the dynasty; Iltutmish stabilised it; Balban strengthened the monarchy.

Khalji expansion required a large paid army. Market controls, revenue demands and troop checks should therefore be read together rather than as unrelated reforms.

Mamluk foundations

  • Aibak's accession, 1206 · Qutbuddin Aibak began independent rule after Ghori's death.
  • Iltutmish's Delhi capital · Iltutmish firmly established Delhi as the Sultanate capital.

  • Tughril revolt in Bengal · Balban suppressed his Bengal governor's rebellion.
  • Sijda and paibos · Balban promoted prostration and kissing the ruler's feet as court rituals.

Khalji expansion and army

  • Khalji foundation, 1290 · Jalaluddin Khalji founded the dynasty; Alauddin succeeded him in 1296.
  • Alauddin's conquest order · Gujarat 1299, Ranthambore 1301, Chittor 1303, and Warangal 1310.
  • Malik Kafur's southern campaigns · Kafur led campaigns for Alauddin against major Deccan and southern kingdoms.
  • Delhi siege by Mongols, 1303 · Mongols besieged Delhi during Alauddin's reign.
  • Siri fortified city · Alauddin built Siri as a major fortified centre of Delhi.
  • Sikandar-i-Sani title · Alauddin used the title meaning Second Alexander.
  • Dagh troop check · Alauddin used horse branding to prevent fraudulent substitution.
  • Chehra troop record · A descriptive roll identified soldiers presented for inspection.
  • Cash-paid standing army · Alauddin maintained a large army paid in cash, supported by price controls.
  • Khalifatullah title · Qutbuddin Mubarak Khalji used this title.
  • Khalji end, 1320 · Khusrau Khan's brief rule ended when Ghazi Malik founded the Tughlaq dynasty.

  • Balban at Garhmukteshwar · A mosque inscription names Balban as the deputy of the caliph.
