First, the concept

Nuclear technology needs separate institutions for research, fuel supply, power generation and safety regulation. Learn the body–role–location links rather than repeating nuclear physics formulas.

A power station can contain several reactor units. Distinguish the site, state and reactor family. A research reactor is not a commercial electricity station.

DAE bodies and regulation

  • Department of Atomic Energy · DAE established in 1954; under the direct charge of the Prime Minister.
  • BARC · Bhabha Atomic Research Centre at Trombay, Mumbai; multidisciplinary nuclear research.
  • Uranium Corporation of India · UCIL carries out uranium mining and processing; Jaduguda is in Jharkhand.

Power stations and research reactors

  • Tarapur Atomic Power Station · Maharashtra; its first two units are boiling water reactors and later units are PHWRs.
  • Rajasthan Atomic Power Station · At Rawatbhata, Rajasthan; pressurised heavy water reactors.
  • Madras Atomic Power Station · Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu; PHWR station distinct from the breeder reactor project there.
  • Kakrapar Atomic Power Station · Gujarat; Unit 3 is an indigenous 700 MWe PHWR that began commercial operation in 2023.
  • Kaiga Generating Station · Karnataka; uses pressurised heavy water reactors.

  • Narora Atomic Power Station · Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh; two 220 MWe PHWR units operated by NPCIL.
