The only anthropoid ape to be found in India is the
- (a) hanuman monkey
- (b) lion tailed macaque of Western Ghats
- (c) slow loris of Assam
- (d) white browed gibbon of Assam
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) white browed gibbon of Assam
The hoolock (white-browed) gibbon of the North-East is India’s only ape.
The idea
“Anthropoid” means man-like. The hoolock gibbon is the only ape that reaches India, living in the tall forests of the North-East south of the Brahmaputra. The other three options are two monkeys and a loris.
Hanuman monkey: a langur, has a tail → Lion-tailed macaque: a monkey, has a tail → Slow loris: an early primate → Hoolock gibbon: no tail, long arms → ape
Why the others are wrong
(a) The Hanuman langur is a monkey.
(b) The lion-tailed macaque is a monkey.
(c) The slow loris is a prosimian, not an ape.
Also know
The male is black with white eyebrows and the female is light brown. A family sings loudly together each morning. Gibbons hardly ever come down, so even one road or railway line through the forest can divide a group.
