UPSC Prelims 1979 · Environment · Species Watch
You are asked to import ostrich, platypus, and koala bear. Which country would you select to go where you get all these three?
- (a) Japan
- (b) Australia
- (c) New Zealand
- (d) Canada
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) Australia
Platypus and koala are native only to Australia; ostriches are farmed there (and its emu is a close relative).
The idea
Two of the three settle it. The platypus and the koala live wild only in Australia. The ostrich is African, though it is farmed in Australia, whose own big flightless bird is the emu.
Ostrich → Africa → Emu and cassowary → Australia → Rhea → South America → Kiwi → New Zealand
Why the others are wrong
(c) New Zealand has kiwis, not koalas or platypus.
The trap
The ostrich is African. Two sure animals (koala, platypus) decide the answer.
Also know
These flightless birds are related, and their spread across the southern continents is another sign that those lands were once joined. The koala is not a bear; it is a marsupial that eats eucalyptus leaves.
🔒 Australia: platypus, echidna (egg-laying), koala, kangaroo (marsupials), emu.
