Recently there was a proposal to translocate some of the lions from their natural habitat in Gujarat to which one of the following sites?
- (a) Corbett National Park
- (b) Kuno-Palpur Wildlife Sanctuary
- (c) Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary
- (d) Sariska National Park
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) Kuno-Palpur Wildlife Sanctuary
Kuno-Palpur (MP) was chosen and prepared as a second home for Asiatic lions (the Supreme Court ordered it in 2013). It later received African cheetahs instead (2022).
The idea
Every wild Asiatic lion lives in and around Gir in Gujarat. One population in one place is like keeping all eggs in one basket: a single epidemic, a big fire or a cyclone could wipe out the whole subspecies. So scientists asked for a second, separate home.
All Asiatic lions in one region → Risk: one disease outbreak could kill most → Kuno in Madhya Pradesh chosen and prepared; villages relocated → Supreme Court orders the shift (2013) → Lions were not sent → African cheetahs released in Kuno (2022)
Why the others are wrong
(a) Corbett is a tiger reserve in the Himalayan foothills.
(c) Mudumalai is in the Nilgiris — not lion habitat.
(d) Sariska is a tiger reserve (tigers were relocated there).
The trap
Sariska is famous for a translocation — of tigers.
Also know
The fear is real: a virus (canine distemper) killed about a third of the lions of Serengeti in 1994 and caused lion deaths in Gir in 2018. The lion count in Gujarat was 674 in 2020 and 891 in 2025. Under Project Lion, Barda sanctuary inside Gujarat is being developed as another home.
🔒 Kuno (MP): picked for lions; got cheetahs in 2022. Sariska: tigers relocated after local extinction.
