UPSC Prelims 2015 · Environment · Nature’s Machinery

Which one of the following National Parks has a climate that varies from tropical to subtropical, temperate and arctic?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) Namdapha National Park

Namdapha (Arunachal) rises from ~200 m to ~4,500 m, so its climate goes from tropical to arctic.

The idea

Climate changes with height. A park shows the widest spread of climates when it has the greatest range of height, from a low base to a high top. Namdapha starts at about 200 m in hot river valleys and climbs to about 4,500 m at Dapha Bum.

About 200 m: tropical rainforest → Higher: subtropical forest → Higher: temperate forest → Top: alpine scrub and snow

Why the others are wrong

(a) Khangchendzonga is mostly temperate to alpine — no tropical zone at its base.

(b) Nanda Devi is high-altitude alpine.

(c) Neora Valley is subtropical to temperate.

The trap

Khangchendzonga has the highest peak, but range of altitude, not height, gives the widest climate spread.

Also know

Namdapha is in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh, on the Myanmar border, along the Noa-Dihing river. It is a tiger reserve and is known as the park with four big cats: tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard. The Namdapha flying squirrel is found only here.

🔒 Namdapha: tropical to arctic; the only park with four big cats (tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, snow leopard).
