UPSC Prelims 2015 · Environment · Nature’s Machinery

"Each day is more or less the same, the morning is clear and bright with a sea breeze; as the Sun climbs high in the sky, heat mounts up, dark clouds form, and then the rain comes with thunder and lightning. But rain is soon over." Which of the following regions is described in the above passage?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (b) Equatorial

At the equator the sun heats moist air every day, it rises, and afternoon convectional thunderstorms follow — the same pattern all year.

The idea

At the equator the midday sun is almost overhead all year. Each morning it heats the wet ground and the air above it. The warm, moist air rises, cools and forms tall clouds, and by afternoon it rains hard. This is convectional rain, and it repeats daily.

Clear morning → Strong heating by noon → Moist air rises → Towering clouds form → Afternoon thunderstorm → Clear evening

Why the others are wrong

(a) Savannah rain is seasonal — months of dry weather.

(c) Monsoon rain is seasonal and lasts for days.

(d) Mediterranean rain comes in winter from cyclones, not daily thunderstorms.

The trap

“Each day is the same” is the clue — only the equator has no seasons.

Also know

The difference between day and night temperature here is larger than the difference between the hottest and coolest months, so people say “night is the winter of the tropics”. The belt has calm air called the doldrums. Regions: Amazon basin, Congo basin, Indonesia and Malaysia.

🔒 Equatorial = daily convectional rain (the “4 o’clock rain”), no seasons.
