UPSC Prelims 2002 · Environment · Nature’s Machinery

Match List-I (Mangrove) with List-II (State): A. Achra Ratnagiri · B. Coondapur · C. Pichavaram · D. Vembanad — 1. Karnataka · 2. Kerala · 3. Andhra Pradesh · 4. Maharashtra · 5. Tamil Nadu

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) A-4, B-1, C-5, D-2

Achra–Ratnagiri = Maharashtra · Coondapur = Karnataka · Pichavaram = Tamil Nadu · Vembanad = Kerala.

The idea

Go round the coast State by State. The east coast has the larger mangroves because its big rivers build deltas. The west coast has smaller patches in estuaries and backwaters.

East coast: Sundarbans (West Bengal) → Bhitarkanika (Odisha) → Godavari–Krishna (Andhra Pradesh) → Pichavaram (Tamil Nadu) → West coast: Vembanad (Kerala) → Coondapur (Karnataka) → Achra–Ratnagiri (Maharashtra) → Gulf of Kachchh (Gujarat)

Why the others are wrong

(b) Puts Pichavaram in Andhra — it is in Tamil Nadu, near Chidambaram.

The trap

Pichavaram (C–5) and Vembanad (D–2) are the two sure pairs; only (d) has both.

Also know

By area, West Bengal has the most mangrove, followed by Gujarat and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Pichavaram, near Chidambaram, is known for boat rides through mangrove channels.

🔒 Pichavaram (TN) · Vembanad (Kerala) · Coondapur (Karnataka) · Achra-Ratnagiri (Maharashtra).
