The idea
A star label tells the buyer how much electricity an appliance uses compared with others of the same type: one star is the least efficient, five stars the most. The aim is to move the whole market towards efficient products.
Bureau sets a test standard for an appliance → Each model is rated one to five stars → Buyer compares running cost → Efficient models sell more → Standards are tightened every few years
Also know
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency was set up in 2002 under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 and works under the Ministry of Power. Labelling started in 2006. For some appliances the label is compulsory (such as room air conditioners, frost-free refrigerators, tube lights and geysers) and for others it is voluntary. The Bureau also runs the PAT scheme for industry and the building energy code.
