- (a) The International Union for Conservation of Nature
- (b) The United Nations Environment Programme

- (d) The Worldwide Fund for Nature
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (a) The International Union for Conservation of Nature
The ISSG is part of IUCN’s Species Survival Commission and runs the Global Invasive Species Database.
The idea
IUCN does its science through expert commissions of volunteer scientists. The largest is the Species Survival Commission. Inside it are more than a hundred specialist groups, one for each group of species or problem (cats, crocodiles, invasive species). So any “Specialist Group” in a question points to IUCN.
A species is carried to a new region → No natural enemies there → It spreads fast → Native species lose food and space → The specialist group records it in the Global Invasive Species Database
Why the others are wrong
(c) The World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland) was a 1983–87 commission, now dissolved.
Also know
The group also publishes the list “100 of the World’s Worst Invasive Alien Species”. Well-known invasive species in India: lantana, parthenium (congress grass), water hyacinth and Prosopis juliflora (vilayati kikar). Invasive alien species are one of the main causes of biodiversity loss, along with habitat loss, over-use, pollution and climate change.
