UPSC Prelims 2008 · Environment · Species Watch

In which one of the following kinds of organisms is the phenomenon found wherein the female kills the male after copulation?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (c) Spider

In many spiders (e.g. the black widow), the female kills and eats the male after mating.

The idea

In many spiders the female is much larger than the male, and she may eat him during or after mating. His body becomes food for the eggs she will lay. The black widow spider is named for this habit.

Small male approaches carefully → Mating → Female often catches and eats him → His body nourishes her eggs

Why the others are wrong

(a) Dragonflies don’t kill mates.

(b) In honeybees the male drone dies after mating because his organ tears off — the queen does not kill him.

The trap

Honeybee drones do die after mating, so (b) tempts. The female doesn’t kill them.

Also know

The praying mantis does the same. A honeybee drone also dies after mating, but from injury to his own body, not because the queen kills him.
