UPSC Prelims 2024 · Indian Geography · Rivers, Lakes and Dams

Consider the following information: Waterfall — Region — River. In how many of the rows is the information correctly matched?

  1. Dhuandhar — Malwa — Narmada
  2. Hundru — Chota Nagpur — Subarnarekha
  3. Gersoppa — Western Ghats — Netravati
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (a) Only one

Only the Hundru row is fully right.

Statement by statement

1. ✗ WRONG region The river is right: Dhuandhar is on the Narmada at Bhedaghat, Jabalpur. But Jabalpur is in the Narmada valley (Mahakoshal), not on the Malwa plateau.

2. ✓ CORRECT Hundru, near Ranchi, is where the Subarnarekha drops off the Ranchi plateau.

3. ✗ WRONG river Gersoppa = Jog Falls in the Western Ghats — but on the Sharavati, not the Netravati.

The idea

A waterfall forms where a river drops sharply over a steep step. A matching row has separate tests for the fall, the river and the regional setting. One correct name cannot rescue a wrong region or river in the same row.

River reaches a steep bedrock step → Water drops over the edge → Falling water erodes the base → A plunge pool deepens → The edge may retreat upstream → A gorge can lengthen behind the fall

Why the others are wrong

(b) Dhuandhar has the wrong region and Gersoppa the wrong river.

(c) Accepts all three rows because each has a familiar waterfall and river. The region or river is swapped in two.

(d) Rejects Hundru too — but it really is the Subarnarekha dropping off the Ranchi plateau.

The trap

You recognise the waterfall and the river, and the row “feels” right. Check the region and the river SEPARATELY — one of them is swapped.

Also know

Shivanasamudra and Hogenakkal are on the Cauvery. Chitrakote is on the Indravati, a Godavari tributary. Gokak is on the Ghataprabha, a Krishna tributary. Falls on different drainage systems may look similar, so learn the river family along with the name.

🔒 Dhuandhar = Narmada, Jabalpur · Hundru = Subarnarekha, Ranchi · Jog/Gersoppa = Sharavati.
