UPSC Prelims 2023 · Indian Geography · Rivers, Lakes and Dams

Consider the following statements: How many of the statements given above are correct?

  1. Amarkantak Hills are at the confluence of Vindhya and Sahyadri Ranges.
  2. Biligirirangan Hills constitute the easternmost part of Satpura Range.
  3. Seshachalam Hills constitute the southernmost part of Western Ghats.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) None

Each hill range is attached to the wrong mountain system.

Statement by statement

1. ✗ WRONG Amarkantak lies where the Vindhya, Satpura and Maikal ranges meet — not the Sahyadri (Western Ghats).

2. ✗ WRONG Biligirirangan hills link the Eastern and Western Ghats (Karnataka–TN border), not the Satpura.

3. ✗ WRONG Seshachalam hills are part of the Eastern Ghats (Tirupati), not the Western Ghats.

The idea

A hill range belongs to a particular mountain system. Similar upland scenery does not make central Indian ranges part of the Ghats. Locate each hill first, then identify its parent system; a wrong parent makes the whole statement fail.

Why the others are wrong

(c) Accepts three misplaced ranges.

The trap

All three hills are real — only their parent ranges are swapped.

Elimination technique

Sahyadri is the Western Ghats belt, far from Amarkantak, so statement 1 fails. That removes “All three”; the two southern hill-system matches still need their own checks.

Also know

Maikal is associated with the Amarkantak upland and the sources of the Narmada and Son. Nilgiri and Biligirirangan occupy the southern Ghats connection region. Nallamala and Seshachalam belong to the Eastern Ghats; Anaimalai and Cardamom belong to the Western Ghats. Red sanders is associated with the southern Eastern Ghats.

🔒 Amarkantak = Narmada & Son source (Maikal) · BR Hills = Ghats junction · Seshachalam = Eastern Ghats.
