A rainy day, as defined by the Indian Meteorological department, is a day when the rainfall at a point received is
- (a) 0.5 mm to 1 mm in 24 hours
- (b) 1.1 mm to 1.5 mm in 24 hours
- (c) 1.6 mm to 2 mm in 24 hours
- (d) above 2.5 mm in 24 hours
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) above 2.5 mm in 24 hours
IMD defines a rainy day as one with 2.5 mm or more of rain.
The idea
Rainfall is measured as the depth of water collected over a level surface. A rainy day is a defined recording category, rather than any day with a few drops. IMD uses at least 2.5 mm in 24 hours; a trace of rain does not meet that threshold.
Also know
Rainfall depth is usually reported in millimetres, while older climate tables may use centimetres. One millimetre over one square metre equals one litre of water. The number of rainy days and total seasonal rainfall measure different things: a few intense storms can produce a large total.
🔒 IMD rainy day ≥ 2.5 mm.
