UPSC Prelims 1998 · Indian Geography · India’s Land and Borders

Which one of the following pairs of cities has recently been connected through a 6-lane express way?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (a) Ahmedabad – Vadodara

The Ahmedabad–Vadodara expressway (NE-1) was India’s first.

The idea

The word “recently” anchors a transport question to its exam year. A six-lane expressway is a road with controlled access and three traffic lanes in each direction. A route that opened later cannot explain a statement about a newly opened road in 1998.

Why the others are wrong

(b) Dhaka–Chittagong is in Bangladesh.

(c) Islamabad–Lahore (M-2) opened in 1997 — but the question is about India’s map.

(d) Mumbai–Pune opened in 2002.

The trap

Mumbai–Pune is often called the first — it came later.

Elimination technique

Ahmedabad–Vadodara opened in 2004, after the 1998 exam. The known 1997 opening of the six-lane Islamabad–Lahore motorway fits the time clue; use chronology rather than assuming an Indian-only question.

Also know

Pakistan’s M-2 motorway connects Islamabad and Lahore and opened in 1997. Ahmedabad–Vadodara is designated NE-1 and opened in 2004. Lane count, opening date and country are independent checks; the presence of foreign cities in the options does not restrict the question to India.

🔒 NE-1 Ahmedabad–Vadodara (2004). Now: Delhi–Mumbai expressway.
