UPSC Prelims 1994 · Indian Geography · People and Settlements
The density of cattle population per 100 hectares of gross cropped area is the highest in
- (a) Bihar
- (b) Haryana
- (c) Madhya Pradesh
- (d) Uttar Pradesh
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) Haryana
The key picks Haryana — high livestock numbers on limited cropped area.
The idea
This density uses gross cropped area as its denominator, rather than the State’s land area or population. Gross cropped area counts land again when more than one crop is grown on it during the year. A large cattle population alone cannot decide the ratio. The comparison needs the livestock and crop-area data relevant to 1994.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Bihar has many cattle but on more crop land.
The trap
A data recall question.
Also know
Net sown area counts each cultivated plot once; gross cropped area counts successive crops separately. Cropping intensity is gross cropped area divided by net sown area, multiplied by 100. Cattle and buffalo are separate livestock categories, so a buffalo breed cannot establish a cattle-only ranking.
🔒 Haryana: Murrah buffalo; high livestock per crop area.
