UPSC Prelims 1989 · Indian Geography · People and Settlements
The primitive tribes of Andaman are descendants of
- (a) Negroids
- (b) Australoids
- (c) Mongoloids
- (d) Caucasoids
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (a) Negroids
The Andaman tribes are of Negrito (Negroid) descent.
The idea
This 1989 question uses an old physical classification for indigenous Andaman communities. Those labels do not mean that a community has a single, simple ancestry or belongs to a fixed biological race. For revision, retain the island–community association rather than treating the label as a modern scientific explanation.
Why the others are wrong
(c) Mongoloid is the Nicobarese type.
Also know
Onge are associated with Little Andaman, Sentinelese with North Sentinel, and Jarawa with parts of South and Middle Andaman. Shompen and Nicobarese are distinct communities of the Nicobar group. The Ten Degree Channel is the geographical divider between the two island groups.
🔒 Andamanese = Negrito.
