UPSC Prelims 1980 · Indian Geography · People and Settlements
The only State in India that shows excess of females over males is
- (a) U.P.
- (b) Kerala
- (c) Maharashtra
- (d) Tamil Nadu
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (b) Kerala
Kerala was the only State with more females than males.
The idea
India’s census sex ratio is the number of females per 1,000 males. A ratio above 1,000 indicates more females than males. Read “only State” in the historical exam setting, because later census results and boundaries can change that description.
Also know
Child sex ratio usually compares girls and boys aged 0–6 and differs from the total sex ratio. Migration can change an area’s total sex ratio even without changing its birth pattern. As of Census 2011, Kerala’s total sex ratio was 1,084; that is a later comparison, not a 1980 figure.
🔒 Kerala sex ratio 1,084 (2011) — highest.
