With reference to the river Luni, which one of the following statements is correct?
- (a) It flows into Gulf of Khambhat
- (b) It flows into Gulf of Kuchchh
- (c) It flows into Pakistan and merges with a tributary of Indus
- (d) It is lost in the marshy land of the Rann of Kuchchh
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) It is lost in the marshy land of the Rann of Kuchchh
The Luni (Rajasthan) ends in the marshes of the Rann of Kutch.
The idea
An inland drainage river ends within land instead of reaching the open sea through a permanent channel. In a dry region, evaporation, seepage and weak lower-course flow can exhaust the river. A westward course therefore does not guarantee an Arabian Sea mouth.
Runoff begins near the Aravalli upland → Luni flows south-west → Water is lost by evaporation and seepage → Lower-course water becomes more saline → Flow spreads into Rann marshes → No permanent open-sea mouth develops
Why the others are wrong
(b) It doesn’t reach the Gulf of Kutch as open water.
Also know
Ghaggar is another river associated with inland drainage in the north-west. Sambhar is a closed-basin lake, not the Luni’s mouth. Mahi and Sabarmati reach the Gulf of Khambhat, so they should be separated from rivers lost in desert or marsh settings.
🔒 Luni: rises near Ajmer (Pushkar), salty lower course.
