UPSC Prelims 1988 · Indian Geography · Rivers, Lakes and Dams
The river which flows between Vindhya and Satpura ranges is
- (a) Narmada
- (b) Tapti
- (c) Mahanadi
- (d) Godavari
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (a) Narmada
The Narmada flows between the Vindhya (north) and Satpura (south).
The idea
A valley can be identified by the hill belts on its two sides. Keep north–south position separate from east–west flow direction. Two west-flowing rivers may occupy different troughs, so their neighbouring ranges cannot be exchanged.
Why the others are wrong
(b) The Tapi flows south of the Satpura.
The trap
Tapi is the other rift river — but it runs south of the Satpura.
Elimination technique
Tapi lies south of Satpura, so it cannot be the river between Satpura and Vindhya. That removes the close look-alike before checking the eastern-flowing alternatives.
Also know
Maikal lies near the eastern end of the Narmada setting. Satpura includes the Mahadeo hills, with Dhupgarh a notable peak. Amarkantak and Multai are useful source anchors for Narmada and Tapi respectively.
🔒 Narmada: Vindhya–Satpura rift. Tapi: Satpura–Ajanta.
