UPSC Prelims 2008 · Indian Geography · Rivers, Lakes and Dams
Rivers that pass-through Himachal Pradesh are:
- (a) Beas and Chenab only
- (b) Beas and Ravi only
- (c) Chenab, Ravi and Satluj only
- (d) Beas, Chenab, Ravi, Satluj and Yamuna
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (d) Beas, Chenab, Ravi, Satluj and Yamuna
The Beas, Chenab (Chandra–Bhaga), Ravi, Sutlej and Yamuna all flow through Himachal.
The idea
A State can straddle a drainage divide and contain rivers from more than one basin. A short stretch along its edge still matters in a question about rivers passing through it. Do not restrict Himachal Pradesh to the Punjab tributaries and forget its south-eastern Yamuna link.
Why the others are wrong
(a) Drops the Ravi, Sutlej and Yamuna.
(b) Drops the Chenab, Sutlej and Yamuna.
(c) Drops the Beas and Yamuna.
Also know
Chandra and Bhaga meet at Tandi to form the Chenab. Beas rises near Rohtang and drains the Kullu valley; Ravi drains the Chamba region. Pong is on the Beas, Chamera on the Ravi, and Bhakra on the Sutlej. Paonta Sahib is a useful Yamuna-side location anchor.
🔒 Himachal: Beas (Kullu), Chenab (Lahaul), Ravi (Chamba), Sutlej (Kinnaur), Yamuna (Paonta).
