Where are Tapovan and Vishnugad Hydroelectric Project located?
- (a) Madhya Pradesh
- (b) Uttar Pradesh
- (c) Uttarakhand
- (d) Rajasthan
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (c) Uttarakhand
Tapovan–Vishnugad (520 MW) is on the Dhauliganga in Chamoli, Uttarakhand.
The idea
A hydropower project is tied to a specific river valley and State. Its town names are stronger location clues than a broad “Himalayan power” association. Uttarakhand had already separated from Uttar Pradesh by the 2008 exam year.
Elimination technique
The Chamoli–Joshimath valley is in Uttarakhand. Apply the post-2000 State boundary rather than the older Uttar Pradesh label to resolve the location options.
Also know
The Dhauliganga of the Alaknanda basin meets Alaknanda at Vishnuprayag near Joshimath. A different Dhauliganga drains towards the Kali in eastern Uttarakhand; the names must not be confused. Tehri is on Bhagirathi, while Vishnuprayag is an Alaknanda project. River and project names can share a confluence label without being identical sites.
🔒 Feb 2021: a rock–ice avalanche (Ronti peak) caused the Chamoli flood that hit Rishi Ganga and Tapovan.
