UPSC Prelims 2008 · Indian Geography · Rivers, Lakes and Dams

With which one of the following rivers is the Omkareshwar Project associated?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (b) Narmada

Omkareshwar dam is on the Narmada (Khandwa, MP), downstream of Indira Sagar.

The idea

Several projects can occupy one river in a cascade, with each using a different stretch of the valley. A project’s temple or town name does not identify its basin by itself. Place it along the river before comparing it with projects on neighbouring systems.

Narmada reaches Indira Sagar → Water continues downstream → Omkareshwar uses another valley stretch → River continues towards lower-basin projects → Narmada reaches Gujarat and the Arabian Sea

Also know

Bargi is another Narmada project, while Sardar Sarovar is farther downstream in Gujarat. Gandhi Sagar and Rana Pratap Sagar belong to Chambal. Ukai belongs to Tapi. These project families help distinguish central Indian rivers with nearby but separate valleys.
