UPSC Prelims 2009 · Indian Geography · Rivers, Lakes and Dams

In India, which one of the following States has the largest inland saline wetland?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (d) Rajasthan

Sambhar Lake (Rajasthan) is India’s largest inland saline wetland and a Ramsar site.

The idea

An inland saline wetland lies away from direct tidal seawater exchange and concentrates dissolved salts. A coastal salt marsh is a different setting even if both contain salt. For the largest-site comparison in this 2009 question, use the inland category rather than all saline landscapes.

Runoff brings dissolved salts → Water gathers in an inland basin → Outflow is limited → Evaporation removes water → Salts concentrate → Seasonal saline wetland remains

Why the others are wrong

(a) Gujarat’s Rann is a saline marsh near the sea, not the largest inland salt lake.

(b) Haryana has no large saline lake.

(c) Madhya Pradesh has no such wetland.

The trap

The Rann of Kachchh is saline but coastal and seasonal.

Elimination technique

The coastal Rann is the tempting Gujarat association, but the stem says inland. Keep that category fixed before comparing the named States.

Also know

Sambhar supports salt production and waterbirds. Didwana, Pachpadra and Lunkaransar are other Rajasthan saline-lake names. Nal Sarovar in Gujarat is a different lake setting; the Rann is a vast seasonal salt-marsh landscape. Ramsar status does not specify whether a wetland is freshwater, saline or coastal.

🔒 Sambhar: largest inland salt lake, Ramsar site, flamingos. Didwana, Pachpadra, Lunkaransar are other Rajasthan salt lakes.
