UPSC Prelims 2004 · Indian Geography · Rivers, Lakes and Dams

Lake Sambhar is nearest to which one of the following cities of Rajasthan?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (b) Jaipur

Sambhar lies about 80 km south-west of Jaipur.

The idea

A nearest-city question is a relative location test. Place the lake first, then compare the cities around it. Being in the same State or being its best-known tourist city does not make a place the nearest.

Why the others are wrong

(a) Bharatpur is in the far east of Rajasthan.

(c) Jodhpur is much farther west.

(d) Udaipur is in the south.

Elimination technique

Sambhar lies west of Jaipur in eastern-central Rajasthan. Bharatpur is farther east, Jodhpur farther west and Udaipur well south; those positions resolve the comparison.

Also know

Pushkar is near Ajmer, while Nakki is at Mount Abu in southern Rajasthan. Jaisamand is near Udaipur. Bharatpur is associated with Keoladeo in eastern Rajasthan. Learning one lake or wetland anchor for each region prevents treating the whole State as one location.

🔒 Sambhar sits on the Jaipur–Nagaur–Ajmer border.
