Which of the following hills are found where the Eastern Ghats and the Western Ghats meet?
- (a) Anaimalai Hills
- (b) Cardamom Hills
- (c) Nilgiri Hills
- (d) Shevoroy Hills
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: (c) Nilgiri Hills
The Nilgiris are where the Eastern and Western Ghats meet.
The idea
A junction is where two regional hill systems approach or meet, not necessarily where their tallest peak stands. The southern plateau edge connects the Western Ghats with branches of the Eastern Ghats. Keep the junction separate from ranges lying farther south.
Why the others are wrong
(a) The Anaimalai Hills are south of the Palghat Gap, only in the Western Ghats.
(b) The Cardamom Hills are at the southern tip of the Western Ghats.
(d) The Shevaroy Hills are in the Eastern Ghats (Salem).
The trap
Anaimudi, the highest peak, is in the Anaimalai — not at the junction.
Also know
Palghat Gap separates the Nilgiri region from the Anaimalai region farther south. Doddabetta is a Nilgiri peak, while Anamudi lies in the Anaimalai hills. Shevaroy and Javadi belong to the Eastern Ghats; Cardamom hills lie farther south in the Western Ghats.
🔒 Nilgiri: junction of the Ghats, Doddabetta (2,637 m). Anaimudi (2,695 m) is south of the Palghat Gap.
