UPSC Prelims 2005 · Indian Geography · India’s Land and Borders

Which one of the following is the correct sequence of the given hills starting from the north and going towards the south?

Show the answer and explanation

Answer: (c) Nallamalai Hills - Javadi Hills - Nilgiri Hills - Anaimalai Hills

Nallamalai (AP, ~16°N) → Javadi (TN, ~12.5°N) → Nilgiri (~11.4°N) → Anaimalai (~10.3°N).

The idea

North–south order is decided by latitude, not by whether a hill belongs to the Eastern or Western Ghats. Plot each range’s broad position and read down the map. Similar names and crossed mountain systems do not change that order.

Why the others are wrong

(a) Puts the Nilgiris before the Javadi — the Javadi are farther north.

(b) This is south to north.

(d) This runs from south to north.

The trap

Reversed orders look right if you read them backwards.

Elimination technique

Nallamalai must come before Javadi, and Nilgiri must come before Anaimalai. Applying both geographical anchors removes every code except (c).

Also know

Shevaroy lies in Tamil Nadu’s Eastern Ghats near Salem. Cardamom hills lie farther south than Anaimalai. The Krishna cuts across the Nallamala region; the Palghat Gap provides a low corridor between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

🔒 Eastern Ghats: Nallamalai, Javadi, Shevaroy. Western Ghats south: Nilgiri, Anaimalai, Cardamom.
